Abstract: This paper will provide an overview of the current state of the UK marine energy industry, covering installed capacity to date, planed projects and development scenarios up to 2020. Reference will be made to the development of RenewableUK’s renewable Energy Database.

This paper will also outline the major recommendations form RenewableUK’s response to
the UK Marine Energy Action Plan and how this could facilitate development. Particular attention will be made to:

  • How the secondary legislation arising from the Marine and Coastal Access Bill will impact the industry.

  • The current status of the UK funding landscape and possible development pathways.

  • Strategic Environmental Assessment and leasing.

  • Technology Pathway

  • Infrastructure, Skills and Supply Chain Development

Conclusions will be drawn from the development over the past year and suggestions to how the industry and government can continue to work together to facilitate a thriving marine energy industry will be made.
